As of May 22nd I no longer work in retail, and I can proudly say that I am one of the thousands of UPS employees working at the Ontario air hub. I applied in early May because I was desperate to get out of my less than pleasant retail job in the mall and working for Steven Tully. (Steven wasn't a man of many morals and long story short, the drama of his affair on his with one of my co-workers caused mass amounts of Drama in the store.) Anyways, I applied and soon had a 1st interview where the H.R. Rep. handed me a 2nd interview card right there and then telling me that they don't do that very often so I guess I must have been lucky! My 2nd interview was only 2 days later, and with some helpful advice from my Mom and Step Dad I won over the interviewer and he arranged my hire/start date.
I was officially Hired on May 22nd, 2008. For the first week I showed up at the hub classroom at 10pm every night to basically sit and take notes on how to properly life packages, what my power zone is, how to prevent injuries and how to handle hazardous materials. Actually, learning about HazMats was fairly interesting and I may even want to study further, perhaps even build a career in the UPS department dealing with monitoring, auditing and emergencies situations with HazMats. 
My first day of actual work was last night and it was a little harder than I had expected. They teach you in class how to build sturdy walls when loading trailers, trucks and air containers, but its rather difficult to do when you must load the packages as they come and they're not coming slow and steady! I only worked 3 hours but I'm still kind of sore in my arms. I work the Intra sort, which is from 10pm to 3am, however in this economy that means 10pm to 1:30am. I specifically load the air containers that are to be sent out on planes less than an hour after I finish loading them. I process the next day air goods that are going from Ontario to Colorado or Montana. On my first day I loaded 380 packages. My trainer says that was a really good rate seeing as how most people load around 250 on their first day, but he also says that he thinks I need to go much faster! ahhh! I'm curious if thats possible...
Anyways, I grew up in a UPS family. We watched the UPS 88 car race on NASCAR every weekend, and Scott always had his UPS buddies over. The biggest reason I joined this company is because I watched my Step Dad support a family of 4 kids with that job and I know UPS offers an amazing salary/benefits package. I'm looking to stay with UPS for a very long time and if my teaching career doesn't pan out then I hope to find a good career with UPS. =)
Renaissances Faire
On 5/10/08 Dave, Carrie, Brandon and I went to the southern California Renn Faire! It was a lot of fun! We all dressed up for the occasion. My best friend Caitlin sewed my skirt and shirt, Brandon & Carrie had there own costumes and Dave rented one. (I personally thought he looked rather handsome in his!) 
Here's Dave and I. He's looking quite like his true self in this costume (minus the shoes of course) I kinda wish he would dress this way all the time! In fact, I wouldn't have a problem dressing this way all the time Myself! 
Here's Carrie and I loving the Camera! I really enjoyed all the role-playing at faire. People who worked there would come up and make comments to Dave about his "strange" shoes and others would come to me and hit on me, in a renaissances fashion. One guy even told Dave that he and I were going to get lost because I, the woman, was holding the map! I thought it was hilarious! There were a lot of cool things at the faire, including Mock Shakespeare plays, comedy shows, people juggling torches, Jousting, lots of homemade goods and clothing for sale and the food was Amazing!
I had so much fun at faire that I think I may even volunteer to work there on the weekends next year! It was really an awesome experience and I encourage anyone who hasn't gone to a renaissances faire before to go when it comes around next year!
